Bandit shot by accomplice after robbing Berbice family

first_imgA bandit was accidently shot and killed by his accomplice while making their escape after robbing an East Bank Berbice family during the wee hours of Sunday. The dead bandit has been identified as Odan Lallbeharry called “Stew”, 45, of New Forest, East Canje, Berbice.According to reports, “Stew” was among five armed men who invaded and robbed the Edinburg Village home of shop owner Nankumar Datt and it was while they were escaping that he was shot and left behind by his accomplices.“During (the robbery) one of the suspects received gunshot injuries in the process of exiting the premises and was later pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital,” a Police report said. The bandits gained entry to the premises by climbing onto a shed and forcing their way through a bedroom windowAccording to the Police, the incident occurred sometime around 01:30h.Datt’s eldest daughter, Kelly, related the ordeal to Guyana Times on Sunday when she explained that she was awoken by the sound of persons walking on the zinc shed attached to their two-storey house and shortly after her father shouted that bandits were coming, they should run.“But when he shouts that, the bandits hear and so they hurry and break the window to my sister’s room and come in the house. She was trying to open the room door to get out but she was having a hard time so they catch and start beating her,” the traumatised Kelly related. The 21-year-old said that she was then confronted by two men and tried to prevent them from getting to her father, who escaped to seek help. Their mother was in hiding at the time. She said that the men began shouting for her father by his call-name “Ball Head” and after they were unable to locate him, they began beating her and her 19-year-old sister. At time there were five men in total, all of whom were masked, she stated.“They beat us bad… they were hitting us with a cutlass; then they told us to put on the lights, and asked for money,” the young woman recalled. She went on to say that three of them remained upstairs with her sister while two of them forced her downstairs into the shop, where she handed over some money, while they picked up a quantity of phone cards.“They bring down my sister and continue to beat her and after some time took us back upstairs and asked for more money. So I tell them they have to search the place but then my mother came out and give them the money ($100,000) because they start beating me and my sister again,” she recounted.Kelly further told this newspaper that the men also took away her mother’s gold bracelet and some artificial jewellery that she and her sister were wearing, before escaping.“They told us not to move from the upstairs so they stay right there and then we hear two gunshots in the downstairs and we get scared because we thought was my father get shoot,” she stated. The young woman said that they remained upstairs for a few minutes until they heard noises from neighbours and came downstairs. She noted that when they came down and got outside, they saw a man lying outside on the bridge, while her father was with the neighbours who were gathering around. The Police then arrived at the scene. In a subsequent statement, the Police said that they arrived on the scene at about 02:00, and found the injured bandit on the businessman’s bridge, clad in dark clothing and a pair of construction gloves. The Police added that the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.Police say they managed to extract some vital information from the bandit before he succumbed. That information led to the arrest of two individuals who are currently in custody assisting with the investigations.last_img read more

If you are looking to drop a few pounds on the lead up to the big day, I have a few tips for you below that will help you to get what you need, before the big man comes to town.Monday is your last chance to join in on our Christmas countdown challenge. After that, we won’t be accepting any new members until January. It gives you 6 weeks to get to work and get in shape for Christmas. You can get signed up through the link below. SIGN UP HEREThere are a few things to consider when planning to get in shape for Christmas.1) You MUST be in a calorie deficit. It doesn’t matter what diet you follow or what guru says what, if you aren’t in a calorie deficit 1st, you will NOT lose body fat.Don’t get caught up on ‘health’ foods, or the latest fad diet that will be floating about.Eat wholefoods 80-90% of the time.Eat less than you expend per day.Don’t binge on the other 10-20%. 2). Eat ProteinTry to eat 1g of protein per pound of bodyweightIt is a basic recommendation for someone who is training and trying to drop fat.It will keep you full and help to preserve muscle mass, which is important when trying to improve your physique when dropping bodyfat. If you don’t want to count calories or grams of protein, use palm-sized portions of protein and have 3-4 servings per day.3). Weight Train 3-5 times per week.If you want to target specific area of your body, weight training is the way to do this. While it won’t specifically burn fat from that area, it will increase blood flow to the stubborn areas and help to mobilise the fat.It will also make your physique look better and weighing less, while looking worse physically makes no sense. So, add in some resistance training using bodyweight and weighted exercises and you’ll be glad that you did.4). Prioritize fruit and vegetables as your carb sources. You get more fibre, more food for less calories than starchy carbs. It’s a win-win situation here. There are loads of options when cooking with vegetables and to add flavour, think of things like spices, salt, pepper etc to flavour them to your liking.5). Keep your starchy carbs for around your training daysA simple way to cycle your carbs is to have carbs with your meals on your training days and stick to vegetables on non-training days. You will automatically reduce your overall calorie intake by doing this, and you will have more calories on the days that you need them most.6). Add Cardio as neededIs cardio needed for fat loss? No!Is it a benefit to it?Yes!Should you add it in straight away? Not necessarily. It is a tool that you can use.You don’t want to use them all at once, because if fat loss stalls, you may have nowhere to go.So, use your cardio wisely and save it until you need it.Fat loss is simple, not easy. You just have to do it and stick to it.If your goal is truly to drop a few pounds before Christmas, the guidelines above gives you a great way to achieve this.#leanin2019Monday is your last chance to join in on our Christmas countdown challenge. Google Earth zooms in on SA

first_imgAn overview of South Africa as it appears in the new Google Earth layer. (Image: South African Tourism)Janine ErasmusA new Google Earth layer focusing entirely on South Africa promises to inspire more interest in the country, especially with the 2010 Fifa World Cup now firmly in the nation’s sights.South African Tourism, which promotes the country’s diverse attractions overseas, and Quirk, an e-marketing company of South African origin, have developed a Google-endorsed South African layer for the popular and absorbing earth navigation programme developed by the internet’s leading search engine. While there are hundreds of user-created layers, South Africa is only the third country, after New Zealand and Egypt, to meet Google’s exacting quality specifications and to be allocated its own official tourism layer.Using satellite imagery, Google Earth takes users on a 3D tour of the world, showing terrain, cities, important landmarks, natural features, and more. The ability to zoom in right down to street level is a distinctive feature of the programme.A layer provides a variety of points of geographic interest, such as tourist attractions or important world events, that the viewer can select to overlay the normal viewing area. These points of interest can include map, road, terrain, and even building data. Layers are often of educational and historic value.Interesting layers created recently include one that tracks the destruction wrought by the May 2008 Myanmar cyclone, one showing the world’s volcanoes, another showing visible shipwrecks around the world, and a Crisis in Darfur layer which shows satellite photos of destroyed villages, locations of refugee camps, and provides links to more information online. A list of layers is available in the Layers panel in the Google Earth programme. The South African experienceThe South African layer, which features a host of attractions ranging from scenic drives and safari destinations to locations of the stadiums for the 2010 World Cup, was launched at the recent Tourism Indaba, held in Durban in May 2008. South African Tourism hosts this annual event which attracts players in the tourism industry from all over the world. It goes live on Google Earth at the beginning of June 2008. Google Earth, says the programme’s developer, is now available in 27 different languages. Images are updated regularly, meaning that users can count on receiving up-to-date information. And with up to 350 million unique users hitting the site between January and May 2008, South African tourism will now receive even broader exposure to the global internet audience. The layer introduces the viewer to 120 points of interest around South Africa, which are shown through satellite imagery, giving travellers a tantalising glimpse of what they can expect to see on their visit. Each destination is categorised with an icon so that viewers can tailor their search to their own interests, whether it is adventure, culture, sport or nature that intrigues them. Holidaymakers can make use of the itinerary planner to get the most from their visit to South Africa. A few popular itineraries are suggested to help get the thinking process started.South Africa is famed for its natural beauty, and nature lovers are spoilt for choice with the likes of the Kruger National Park, the Table Mountain National Park, the Cango Caves, the Blyde River Canyon, and a number of others.Cultural destinations and those relating to heritage, such as the Cradle of Humankind and the Richtersveld National Park – both world heritage sites – are explored in the layer. Adventure travel, for which South Africa is renowned, is also extensively covered with links to white water rafting, skydiving, bungee jumping, abseiling down Table Mountain and more. Then there is a category relating specifically to the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Visitors can learn about the stadiums and host cities that will be bringing the World Cup to Africa for the first time, and other football-related information is provided, such as links to local clubs and football bodies. For those planning a trip to South Africa in June 2010, the itinerary planner will ensure that all the important football host cities are included, as well as other useful information. All the interactive Google Earth features that regular users have come to enjoy are there, such as related Wikipedia entries, and users may add their comments on images ranging from the Gautrain construction project to 2010 stadiums in progress.Useful linksSouth Africa on Google EarthSouth African TourismGoogle Earth CommunityQuirk eMarketinglast_img read more

South Africa makes strides in fighting HIV

first_imgThe mother-to-child transmission rate of HIV in Soweto has been reduced from 8% in 2008 to 2% in 2011. (Image: Anova Health Institute) Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi said that before the HIV testing and counseling campaign was launched, only 2-million South Africans were tested annually, but now 11.9-million have been tested. (Image: Bongani Nkosi)  MEDIA CONTACTS • Melissa Meyer  Anova Health Institute: HIV/AIDS  +27 11 715 5828 or +27 72 778 1727 RELATED ARTICLES • Global grannies unite against Aids • Garden of Hope for HIV/Aids • Keeping the story of HIV alive in SA • HIV/Aids in South AfricaRay MaotaThe South African health fraternity has made strides in curbing HIV/Aids mother-to-child transmission rates in Soweto, bringing incidences down from 8% in 2008 to 2% in 2011.The Anova Health Institute, which works in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Health in providing HIV/Aids services at clinics around the country, has welcomed the news.Dr Coceka Mnyani, head of the institute’s Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTC) programme in Soweto, said: “This means that HIV-positive mothers-to-be who enter our PMTC programme have a less than 2% chance of transmitting the virus to their babies.”This is good news for Soweto, a township in south-west Johannesburg, Gauteng, which has a population of more than 4-million.“We have been working closely with the Department of Health – particularly in implementing the new treatment guidelines from April 2010 – that have allowed for more effective prevention. It is a partnership that we are very proud of,” said Mnyani.South Africa’s population, which stands at over 49-million, only accounts for 0.7% of the world’s total population, but carries 17% of the HIV/Aids pandemic.President Jacob Zuma announced on World Aids Day in December 2009 that a set of measures would be put in place to ensure the mother-to-child transmission rate is decreased. These measures were implemented in April 2010 and included starting antiretroviral treatment when the CD4 count is 350 or less in HIV-positive pregnant women and HIV and TB co-infected people, starting the prevention of mother-to-child transmission treatment at 14 rather than 28 weeks of pregnancy, and treating HIV-positive newborns regardless of their CD4 count.Successful measuresMinister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi announced on 31 May 2011 in his budget vote policy speech, presented to the National Assembly, that there had been varying improvements since the new measures were put in place. These include an increase in health centres that are accredited antiretroviral service points from 490 to 2 205, an increase in certified nurses who can administer antiretrovirals from 250 to 4 000, and an increase in the number of people who take annual HIV tests. The minister said: “Before the HIV testing and counselling campaign was launched by the president on 25 April 2010 at Natalspruit Hospital, only 2-million South Africans were testing annually.”“Since the launch of the campaign only a year ago, 11.9-million South Africans have tested and the figure is growing every month,” added Motsoaledi.Due to the campaign, the number of people on antiretroviral treatment has also increased – from 923 000 to 1.4-million people. The Department of Health has managed to cut the price of antiretroviral drugs too, making them more accessible to affected individuals. The Medical Research Council is due to announce its findings on the reduction of mother-to-child transmission rates at the 5th SA African Aids Conference in Durban from 7 to 10 June.Working togetherThe Anova Health Institute was formed in October 2009 and focuses on HIV, Aids and TB. It is funded by Pepfar through USAid and smaller agencies like Orange Babies, which provides support for HIV-positive mothers and babies.Anova’s PMTC programme in Soweto is known as Tirisanong and is available at 13 antenatal facilities across the township and at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Tirisanong means “working together” in Setswana. The institute focuses on counselling and voluntary HIV testing of pregnant women, CD4-count testing and screening and testing for TB.last_img read more
