When Alison and Peter Smithson designed the put-away-house in the 1990’s they were elaborating on an idea, they first put forward in 1958 in an article called “the future of furniture”. Convinced that the overabundance of consumer goods would soon become oppressive, they designed a house with an elaborate backstage: “The heart of the plan is a large-item store, with access directly from outside, available to every room without passing through another room.” They may have anticipated the rise of commodity culture, but they were misguided about its nature. Glut did not represent a burden for the first generation that was able to accumulate a myriad of products. For them, it was the very image of freedom.Save this picture!© Filip DujardinSave this picture!© Filip DujardinArchitects were never any good at anticipating changes in the way we live. Excessive and therefore unforgettable architecture always resulted from an end-game. The buildings we call revolutionary are often the final and most revealing examples of a way of life about to disappear. When the Smithsons finally presented a plan for the house in which we were meant to brave the commodified world, it was remarkably conventional, aiming for privacy, comfort, and independence as does any family home since the nineteenth century.Save this picture!Section ASomething has changed however in the lives of the people Alison and Peter Smithson were addressing, a generation often referred to as babyboomers. Their children have left home and many are moving to smaller dwellings, bringing along all the things that have accompanied them throughout their lives. For one such couple, Eagles of Architecture built a house unlike any other.Save this picture!© Filip DujardinSave this picture!© Filip DujardinSave this picture!© Filip DujardinAt the start, there was a house, so conventional it could have been a textbook example, designed to normalize family relations within the home, a setup the owners had no use for anymore. What followed can hardly be described as a refurbishment. The house was emptied out until only the outer walls and the roof was left, and a new house was built on the inside, brave and cartoonlike. A stair spirals a single column that stands off-center in a space no bigger than 7,40 by 5,60 meter. This column is surrounded by a whirling world of cupboards.Save this picture!© Filip DujardinThe effect is not unlike the ever-increasing number of brooms circling around the poor sorcerer’s apprentice in Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouses movie from 1940. After first having enchanted the broom to help him fetch water, the apprentice is unable to stop the broom from performing this task over and over again. By splitting the broom with an ax, it is not eliminated but multiplied, and the workshop soon floods. The cupboards are not backstage, like those in the put-away-house, they are center stage. They make up the house without organizing or dividing it.Save this picture!© Filip DujardinSave this picture!© Filip DujardinAll Mickey Mouse films are founded on the motif of leaving home in order to learn what fear is, Walter Benjamin wrote in 1931. The house Eagles of Architecture built in Dendermonde leaves behind the social construct of a home as their inhabitants face the fears and fearlessness of a generation that braved the world of commodity culture.Save this picture!© Filip DujardinProject gallerySee allShow lessArchitecture and the Stain of Modern Day SlaveryArticlesHorizon House / BauenSelected Projects Share Lead Architects: CopyHouses•Dendermonde, Belgium Belgium Photographs Area:  83 m² Year Completion year of this architecture project Begijnhoflaan 27 House Renovation / Eagles of Architecture Photographs:  Filip Dujardinlast_img read more

Fryslan Project: Van Oord, Siemens Gamesa Named Preferred Contractor

first_imgImage source: Van OordThe consortium including Van Oord and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been selected by Windpark Fryslan B.V. as the preferred contractor for the construction of the Fryslan nearshore wind farm. The wind farm will contain 89 wind turbines with a capacity of 4.3 MW each in the Frisian section of the IJsselmeer Lake, next to the Afsluitdijk dam, in the Netherlands. The nomination as preferred main contractor also includes construction of a nature conservation island next to the Afsluitdijk dam.By using soil material from the IJsselmeer Lake, two hectares of new land and 25 hectares of sheltered shallow water will be created. The island will be used during the construction phase and will be transformed next to a nature conservation area. New natural areas will develop on the banks of the island, both above and below water, Siemens Gamesa said in its release.“Building the Fryslan nearshore wind farm is an important step forward in meeting the climate objectives, both national as for the Province of Friesland. Contributing to the energy transition is contributing to a better world for future generations. It is great to part of this,” said Arnoud Kuis, Managing Director Offshore Wind at Van Oord. The final contracts for the construction are expected to be signed later this year, according to the official announcement. The entire project involves an investment amount of over EUR 500 million.Construction works are set to start in 2019 and Fryslân nearshore wind farm is planned to be in full operation by mid 2021.Image source: Van Oordlast_img read more

first_imgAfter a series of fist pumps, chest bumps, hoots and hollers from other teammates, Wisconsin football outside linebacker Joe Schobert, a redshirt junior, approaches fellow OLB Vince Biegel, puts his hands on Biegel’s shoulder pads and simply walks away. The exchange occurred five minutes into the third quarter of last season’s 59-24 blowout against Nebraska. It was a perfect characterization of the duo; mirroring their juxtaposed positions on the field, they are opposites in demeanor. Before the exchange, Biegel, now also redshirt junior, shot his gap as the sun set and snow fell at Camp Randall Stadium, and stripped the football from then-Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah. The Badgers recovered the ball, and the play sparked the second-half rout of the Cornhuskers. What ensued immediately after is vintage Biegel, who describes his playing style as “controlled chaos.”Biegel, a self-proclaimed emotional leader, hyping everyone around him, and Schobert, even-keeled and level-headed, provide a dynamic on the field that is essential for every football team, Biegel said.“You don’t want to get too high or get too low,” Biegel said. “You want to be right in that happy medium. Speaking from a defensive standpoint, you want to play with high emotion, but also knowing your assignment and technique.”Being the emotional leader is something Biegel prides himself on, he said.“We’ll be backed up against the wall — we need a guy that’s going to be able to step up in there and get the guys rolling,” Biegel said. “That’s a role I take on and cherish.”He adds, “I think it pays off and rubs off.”Joey Reuteman/The Badger HeraldIt rubs off so much that Schobert said Biegel gets so fiery he doesn’t even need to open his mouth to the other team.“He’s loud and he’s obnoxious to the other teams,” Schobert said. “It’s great for us. It’s a way for us to get pumped up. Always edgy.”Schobert takes a toned down approach, which creates a good balance.“I try to be a little bit more sneaky about it. He’ll get up right in your face. I might say a couple of things but I try to stay a little more calm … I don’t talk as much, because I know [Biegel] will be doing that for us.”When Biegel’s “controlled craziness” teeters on instability, he has Schobert there to bring him back to earth and the dynamic works inversely when Biegel’s enthusiasm helps motivate Schobert.“I’m a great guy to calm him down if he gets a little too high,” Schobert said. “And he’s a great guy to pick me up if I get a little too low.”Whatever the system is, it works, and the stat sheet shows it.The pair played key roles on a Wisconsin defense that finished with a national ranking at the end of last season. In 2014, Biegel recorded 56 total tackles and led the team with 16.5 tackles for loss, forcing two fumbles. Schobert was fourth on the team with 69 total tackles, 13.5 for loss. For all of their differences in on-field demeanor, Biegel and Schobert have fostered a friendship throughout the years. They live two houses away from each other and are roommates on the road.“Off the field, he’s just a normal guy,” Schobert said of Biegel.  “He’s a good guy to hang out with.”And the competitive nature in both that pushes them on the field translates to the occasional video game tournament.“We’re always competitive in everything we do,” Schobert said. “On or off the field.”On the field, the two have an understanding of the other’s tendencies, a product of them playing together for four seasons now.“We can kind of feel each other out. I know what he’s thinking, he knows what I’m thinking,” Biegel said. “We’ve been playing with each other for a while now.”Biegel used the old Chinese symbol “yin-yang” to summarize the relationship.“It’s a fun duo,” he said. For them, definitely. Maybe not so much for opposing offenses on Wisconsin’s schedule this season.last_img read more

Twitter Solidifies Governance: New Terms Keep Out Bots

In the past year Twitter has noticed an influx in bots and to curb it, the company is strengthening its policies. In a recent blog post by co-founder Biz Stone, the company announced amendment of its Terms of Service. ReadWriteWeb recently covered Facebook’s widely-criticized TOS proceedings. As a stark improvement, Twitter is offering users an archived copy of its past TOS as well as a link to its Twitter support portal for feedback. Stone outlined a number of changes to the Terms of Service including advertising stipulations, ownership and usage agreements, API usage and a clear mechanism for dealing with spam. While many of the points are reiterations of pre-existing policies such as the “right to remove content” and “reclaim user names”, a number of points have been added to protect against malware and bots. As Twitter’s API and site feeds can be used by a variety of 3rd party developers, it’s only natural that a service with this sort of popularity would attract it’s share of bottom feeders.
