The German is known for his charitable nature and already gives around £2-£3m a year to charities across the world. It therefore came as a surprise that Ozil refused to the request, particularly given that the money would be refunded if the club qualify for the Champions League and partially reimbursed if they qualify for the Europa League.ADVERTISEMENT Ozil earns £350,000-a-week (Picture: Getty)However, ESPN claim that Ozil’s reason was that he felt there was a lack of communication from the club about the request and that he felt the Gunners assumed all players would adhere without question.AdvertisementAdvertisementOzil wants assurances over how the money will be used and believes it was a mistake not to consult with lawyers over the request. Kyra Makortoff — eager to play in front of the home crowd

first_imgDespite being only in Grade 10, Kyra Makortoff is no stranger to the big stage, having played at the 2012 B.C. Summer Games in Surrey. And that confidence has allowed 5’6” Makortoff has fit right in with the older players.“Among other contributions to our team, Kyra’s back row play and serve have been a source of personal pride throughout her volleyball career,” said the Senior Girl’s Player profile guide.Like many of her teammates, Makortoff is excited to be the host school for the event. While realizing it’s a big undertaking to play host to 15 other teams and more than 200 athletes and coaches, life is good when you don’t need to hop a bus or pack a suitcase. “It’s going to be pretty exciting to play in front of the home crowd and, at the same time, we get to sleep in our own beds,” the country music fan said.Despite getting into volleyball late by South Slocan standards — in Grade 7 — the sport Makortoff quickly became part of the culture at Mount Sentinel. So playing for the Cats was just another stepping stone in her net career.“I really like the sport because it allows me to focus on something that I enjoy doing while as the same time takes my mind off (other) things,” the 15-year-old Makortoff explained. That enjoyment allows Makortoff to have no problem attending two to three practices per week during the season as well as participate in the club season. The tournament begins Wednesday with round robin play at both LVR and Selkirk College gymnasiums. The momentum and excitement continues to build, and next week, the pressure promises to increase for the Wildcats as the tournament nears.“Ya there’s pressure on us,” Makortoff admits. “Our school is known for winning volleyball championships more than once.”Despite that pressure, Makortoff has a different focus entering the final tournament of the season.“Obviously, everyone’s goal on our team is to win because winning is big but mainly (my goal) is to play my best and enjoy the last year with the Grade 12s on the team.” In less than a week the Mount Sentinel Wildcats will host the B.C. High School A Girl’s Volleyball Championships (November 28-December 1) at the Selkirk College and L.V. Rogers gymnasiums.Hosting the provincial event is nothing new to the South Slocan-based school as Mount Sentinel has been the feature site of the provincial tournament eight times since 1991 and has won four titles since 1997, the last coming in 2007.Mount Sentinel, currently ranked third in the province at the Single-A Girl’s Division, has not experienced that much success on the big stage of late. However, the players are hopeful home court advantage will power the squad to the top of the heap when the prestigious Blue Banner is awarded to the winning team on the evening of December 1.Before the first serve is taken, The Nelson Daily Sports Editor Bruce Fuhr is getting readers into the provincial spirit with a series of profiles on the 2012 Mount Sentinel Wildcats.Today we feature Grade 10 right side Kyra Makortoff.last_img read more

first_imgOn the 17th March 2018, Brand South Africa’s Constitutional Awareness programme which aims to inspire constitutionalism, tolerance and constructive expression amongst the youth was in Cape Town. The purpose was for Brand South Africa to facilitate an engagement amongst the youth, through a collaboration with the award-winning web-film influencer, Imraan Christian in the community of Hangberg.Imraan Christian, a renewed visual artists and influencer who worked with Brand South Africa in creating one of the three constitutional awareness web-films, collaborated together with the team on the design of the engagement using the arts to trigger community dialogue. The day unfolded with portraits of people from the Hangberg community where Imraan worked with his team Pete Michaels Parker, Fidal Meter, Waseem Noordien, Mo Hassan, Mr Griep and Amiena Christian to shoot, print and strategically place these on the walls and fences of Hangberg.“The community of Hangberg has come alive, I had a tannie(aunty) coming to me wanting her wall to also have a portrait stuck on it. This reaffirmed a sense of pride and ownership by the community”, said Imraan Christian. The children of Hangberg were given quick lessons on break-dance and skateboarding as well. While others were drawn to expressing themselves through painting.“We aim to take these young ones off the streets, by encouraging them to learn a new skill, to express themselves through the various forms of arts. The dance classes that we are starting at the Bay Harbour Market, I believe will open up a world beyond their realities”, said artist Spike P.“There is nothing more heartwarming than seeing a smile on a child’s face and planting a seed of positive reaffirmation for the possibility of a brighter future. The purpose of this engagement was to do exactly that, and Brand South Africa we want to utilize these creative platforms to reach out to communities and the youth to educate them of the importance of constitutional awareness and active citizenship.” said, Brand South Africa’s Stakeholder Relations Manager: Government Ms Toni Gumede.“On behalf of the entire Hangberg family, we would like to thank you Brand South Africa for the support and trust in creating space and ideas like we have. Energy Star Program to Include Clothes Dryers

first_imgFor the first time, the government’s Energy Star program will include clothes dryers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced.Until now, the EPA’s Energy Star program had excluded the appliances even though they use an estimated 6% of all residential energy. How come? The energy efficiency of different makes and models didn’t vary appreciably. (For more information on this topic, see Alternatives to Clothes Dryers.)That appears to be changing, and the new specifications approved by the EPA will recognize electric, gas, and compact dryers that use approximately 20% less energy than required by the minimum efficiency standards effective in 2015, the EPA said in its announcement May 27.“The addition of clothes dryers expands the range of Energy Star products to include one of the most energy-intensive home appliance not yet covered by the program,” EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in a prepared statement.More than 80% of all U.S. households have a clothes dryer, and if all of them met the new specifications, energy bill savings would amount to more than $1.5 billion a year and 22 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be avoided annually. New technology is promisingHeat-pump clothes dryers, developed in Europe in the mid-1990s, are one type of energy-efficient dryer likely to make the Energy Star list. Manufactured by a number of companies, they can reduce energy consumption over standard models by as much as 50%, according to a report from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2010.The dryers extract latent heat from the air and pump it into the clothes drum. Warm, moist air that exits the drum goes through a lint screen and an evaporator, and the water is removed, the Berkeley Lab report said. Instead of venting the air to the outside, as would be the case in a conventional dryer, these models circulate the warm and now mostly dry air back into the drum. Some models don’t have to be vented to the outside.Heat-pump clothes dryers haven’t been widely available in the U.S., although the Lawrence Berkeley report said there are 25 models available in Europe. They’re also more expensive than conventional models: a Consumer Reports article notes that one LG model will be here by mid-summer at a cost of $1,500 to $1,600.In general, the EPA said, clothes dryers that meet Energy Star requirements are likely to have features such as improved auto-termination sensors, which end the cycle automatically by sensing when clothes are dry. The EPA said its new specification also would list optional features, such as the ability to alert a user that the dryer wasn’t functioning properly, or give users feedback on the energy efficiency of different drying cycles. In order to quality for the Energy Star label, products must win third-party certification based on testing at an EPA-approved laboratory.last_img read more

Tarn Taran blast case handed over to NIA

first_imgThe Central government on Friday accepted the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government’s recommendation to hand over the Tarn Taran blast case of September 5 to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in view of its national and international ramifications, and the suspected links of the accused to the Pakistan-backed Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).A communiqué to this effect has been received by the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police- Punjab, according to an official spokesperson. The case registered under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Explosive Substances Act, related to a powerful explosion that took place in a vacant plot on the outskirts of the Pandori Gola village in the Tarn Taran district. Two persons were killed and one other injured in the blast, which took place when the victims were reportedly digging a pit to retrieve a dumped explosive consignment, which they mishandled. The Punjab Police has arrested eight members of the Pakistan-backed module, and their interrogation led to a complex web of conspiracy and attacks by the group, including an aborted attack on a “high value target” in 2016.The spokesperson said seven others, including the alleged module leader and main conspirator Bikramjit Singh alias Granthi, who is believed to be in Austria, are still absconding. “A ‘Granthi’ by profession and a follower of Damdami Taksal, Bikramjit planned to target high political dignitaries, socio-religious places, local rival politicians, Hindu leaders and Sikh preachers, with the help of local-made crude bombs. An IED (improvised explosive device) expert, he also planned to attack police personnel with multiple local-made bombs,” said the spokesperson.last_img read more
